How will you address a lady in a formal letter?
|
Hi everybody!!!
I would like to know how should we address a lady in a formal letter. Like for men, we use Dear Mr. ABC. What about a lady? I don t think we can use Dear Mrs. ABC or Dear Ms. ABC.
Thanks in advance
Regards Vikral

Dear Mrs. ABC or Dear Ms. ABC.
Nothing else to say! :)

Hi RabbitWho
But here in India we are a bit conservative and hesitate to use "dear" with females. Do we have any other option? Like should we use "Respected Ms. or Mrs. ABC". This also sounds odd to me. Any suggestions please....

Hi Vikral,
If you wish to avoid using "Dear", you can always just say
To Mrs. or Ms. ABC,
What do you think? |

Hi Vikral,
The convention in English is Dear Sir or Dear Madam or Dear Sir or Madam if you don t know the name of the person to whom you are writing; Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Smith if you do know the name. The use of Dear Mrs ... does not imply familiarity or disrespect in any way.
In business, over the last few years, some firms have simply used the salutation Mrs Smith or even Jane Smith without the Dear but this has lately fallen out of favour as it seems rather cold and even impolite.
Hope this helps. |
