Possessive Forms and Nouns as adjectives
|
Hi,
Can you help me, please ?
How can I help my sts to differentiate between using Possessive Forms & using Nouns as adjectives ????????????
I know that we use Possessive Forms to show something belongs to someone or something .
What about using nouns as adjectives ???
e.g.
Classroom door . Although the door belongs to the classroom , we don t use the Possessive Form . why ??? How can I explain that to sts ?????
Thanks a lot in advance,
Noor |

I think you can tell them that the door cannot belong to the classroom - something can only belong to a living organism (like humans or animals). I m not sure, but I think that s the correct explanation. Or you can tell them that the door doesn t belong to the classroom - it s a part of it.

adjectives are used to describe so use examples of how nouns can also describe other nouns. for example, i asked my students to give me some food nouns, they came up with cheese, strawberry, ham, apple etc... so i made the list and gave them another list with a few words that we could combine with the ones they gave, like sandwich, juice, cake. then i asked them to tell me which words could describe what kind of sandwich someone could buy. they say cheese, ham, or what kind of juice or cake... that way they realized that nouns can also be used to describe. |
