Hi everyone! I m designing a didactic unit about women issues. I would like to know your opinion about important women in history who I should mention as well as today s important figures. Thank you in advance!

Hello again,
I think it s pretty difficult to say who the most influential women are if there are no specific criteria according to which we should choose... If you re looking for women who sacrificed their lives to the poor, we can t forget Mother Theresa, if you re looking for monarchs, you should mention Maria Therese, if your looking for politicians, Margaret Thatcher, (or Angela Merkel, if talking about contemporary figures) if for writers, for instance Toni Morrison (I like her:)...and so on..... I think the criteria are important, because if speaking in general, it s terribly difficult to choose bye

You re right, sorry I didn t specify, I was looking for women who fought for women r rights in history as well as important icons in the 21st century. I know there are plenty websites with loads of women (lucky us) but I wanted to know your opinions as I cannot include all of them.
Another question, as I m adapting articles...do you know any online dictionary where I can find easy definitions and synonyms? I m doing it for a pre-intermediate level.
thanks a lot again...you are always very helpful!!!

I would suggest Gloria Steinem because she brought womens issues to light. She encouraged women to pursue careers and political activism in the same manner as men do. She also wrote several books and has a magazine for women.
Another important figure would be Rosa Parks who refused to give up a seat to a white man on a segregated Montgomery bus and because of her resistance it changed events in the civil rights movement. She later became a leading spokeswoman for civil rights. She was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. |

I would mention that there are certain reasons why there are fewer famous women in history, one of these reasons being the discrimination. Let s think about when women got the right to vote -as an example. I would also mention that the discrimination is still a modern issue as there are countries where the women are simply servants, without any rights- how can a woman living under these circumstances be famous or do smth memorable? She is not allowed. (last year I visited a certain country and I was shocked to see men bathing in the sea and staying on the beach and their women fully-dressed with shoes on and all the stuff staying near- at 40 degrees C - is life fair?) I would also mention that women who had/have a male pseudonym got/get more attention.(see George Sand) I would DEFINITELY say that Behind Every Strong Man Stands An Even Stronger Woman. |

If you re looking for women who fought for women s rights be sure to include Antoine Condorcet and Olympe de Gouges. As to dictionaries www.onelook.com
@ donapeter- I completely agree! Unfortunately this is not recognised by many governments, traditions and beliefs - not even today. |
