what does "his" refer to in the paragraph?
Can you help me please? I feel confused. As an answer to the question "what does (his) refer to?", should we write (physician) or (physician s)? [I have known my physician for years. (...) I threw down my packet of
cigarettes right in his chambers dustbin.] Thank you in advance.

I think is "physician" "His" refers to him, right?

"...right into the physician s chamber s dustbin". Since "his" is possessive, the noun it replaces must be possessive.

I think "physician" is the correct answer. "His" refers to the physician

If you wanted to rewrite the sentence, it would read: I have known my physician for years. (...) I threw down my packet of cigarettes right in my physician s chamber s dustbin. His - refers to the speaker s physician. Hope that helps! Lindsey

In the case you want to avoid repetitive word, your first sentence is correct . I agree with yanogator s explanation ;)
