pronunciation of "ate"

Hello everyone! Which is more common in the UK, eit or at ?
I ve always pronounced the past simple of eat as eit and I usually try to use the British English accent.

[eit] is definitely correct [aet] is for at (like in hat / mat / cat)

I was taught to say [et], but Longman dictionary of contemporary English says:
ate /et, eit $ eit/ the past tense of eat.

So, both forms are possible in Br. English.

I hope it helps,

Larisa

WOW!! I m quite surprised to hear that the pronunciation [et] is supposed to be British, because at school I was taught that it is correct to pronounce "ate" as in "eight" [eit]; and I have been learning British English all my life...

Yes, ate as in eight as far as I m concerned - but even eight can be pronounced differently depending on where you come from (compare a cockney 8 with, for example, an Ulster 8 ).

Et is not uncommon either for ate .

By the way, how do you get phonetic notation to work here?

Interesting...I always teach the prounciation as /eit/, but will often use /et/ in my own speech. Maybe we view /et/ as more informal?
