I will make this post very brief... If you wish to grasp the world we live in and why everything is wrong you need to do two things. 1. Get out of the matrix. 2. Google this word: ILLUMINATI. These discussions are pointless until we all get educated and have a clear understanding of the real root of evil. That s all I m going to say.... |

People, people, no need to get that emotional. Let s not forget the objective of this site was and I think has always been to share the work we do for our classes. If it has worked for us, why not share it with others, and thus get more and newer ideas into our teaching practice.
I understand everyone, in our workplaces, whichever they are, teachers or not, are surrounded by politics, and we do our part to share our views, directly or indirectly. The reality is that we have different positions regarding different things, and some of those positions may be offensive for some people. We all need to be mindful of this. hasan habach, I don t see how mentioning my country s recent bicentenial celebrations can be offensive. I think that s where we need to draw a line. Subjective comments about delicate issues should be avoided to keep this friendly atmosphere. That s my opinion anyway.
Linda, I can see your point, but as other members have said, this is not the right context for that kind of discussion. Unfortunately, not everyone is as tolerant as you are, and maybe for some, a statement showing disagreement about politics is the last thing they want to hear about someone else. Please also bear that in mind.
wakebeauty - I don t get it either... but topolina is right... Let s keep it friendly. See? Comments to hasan habach (and his/her response) are already heated... |

Dear Linda,
Thank you so much for the words of wisdom you ve used to pave the way for a very civilized world of teachers. This Utopian world that we ll always dream of but will never be lucky to live in.A world where things should be called by their names.A world where all the people have to admit their mistakes and avoid repeating them.A world where forgiveness, wisdom and love should reign over vengeance and hatered.A world where the teachers should be judged for the quality of politicians they make.Let s work hand in hand and transmit these values to our offsprings and to our students and let s pray for a better day. |

Dear Linda and all, I think we as teachers
should be the first to discuss, agree, disagree, teach andtreatss as awhole person, not just EFL , but I feel that, although most of us here would like to talk about everything and anything, many will take things personally and not be able to maintain a peaceful atmosphere around here. It s a shame, though, I think
it dmake us grow as people if we could discuss topics of all sorts , but I don t think that s going to happen ... A big hug to all. |

I completely agree with Linda. If we turn our back to problems and avoid some subjects on the forum, what kind of people will we be?
I didn t see the post deleted and I understand each one of Linda s words. We had a black period of dictatorship in Brazil, and I remember that. Those aren t good memories, believe me...
If there s something we don t agree or don t accept, why should we keep silent? Besides teachers, we are educators and a great portion of the future is in our hands. What will we teach our students? To see only what is pleasant for their eyes and pretend the rest doesn t exist?
I m with Linda (sorry Victor once more...) but sensorship is something I wouldn t like to deal with. Of course we can t turn the forum into a mess, but we should have the right to express our opinions, to tell the others about politics or anything related to the "human world".
Some of our classes may include debates about other countries, their culture and government. Some of us are also ESP teachers and politics is included among the topics to be discussed, as well religion, culture, arts, moral values, etc.
As teachers we should respect the others and deal with any subject without insults and attacks. But if the posts don t include personal attacks, I think we should let them go. IMHO, of course.
Have a nice day.

Many of us have been taught to avoid politics, religion and controversial subjects in polite conversation, but a true democracy can only thrive when people are confident to express their opinions freely and debate the topics.
I would very much like to hear what is happening in other countries and to know the views of the people who live there. The only problem is that some people hold their feelings about these subjects very dear and some people feel their view is the correct one and feel threatened by opposing views. This could cause very heated discussions and insults being thrown.
On a previous link Zora made this suggestion:
I am not opposed to discussing some politics herebut not on the main board. Maybe we need a thread for World Events where we as teachers can ask and inform ourselves as to what is going on in a certain place.
Perhaps a thread for World Events could be presented and if things get out of hand then it should be removed.
Read the thread Alienboy posted to read more on Zora s comments. |

I didn t see the original thread nor did I read Victor s new rule, but I personally am very happy to see politics and religion kept out of ESL printables. It has nothing to do with censorship, but rather with something we try to instill in our students as well: that there is an appropriate time and place for everything. ESL printables is surely not the place for heated political discussions, especially as outrageous messages (from any and all sides) can be posted in a nearly anonymous way. As someone has suggested, perhaps, if there is a demand for it, there could be a separate page in ESL printables for World events.

Hi Giovanni!
I will take the opportunity to say how much I appreciate your contribution to this site and respect your opinions and views, always bringing wise comments to the forum.
I also want to explain that I don t want to encourage heated discussions on the forum. If some people don t know how to discuss such controversial (and important) topics without insults, I guess it s the case to practice and get used to it, and not to ban the topic.
As teachers we are engaged in teaching but we should also be engaged in learning, and conducting a polite conversation on controversial issues may be an important skill to be developed and used with our children in class.
Have a nice day.

Dear Linda, I was also born in dictatorship (because that s what comunism is for me as my family was persecuted back then) and now we have a democratic country. But I believe Vicotr s decision was roght. The thread on the forum yesterday turned against Israel and its people. We are NOT responsible for things our governments do and I cannot see reason why should our members from Israel (or some other country) be attacked just because they are from there. This could happen to anyone (eg. Kurdish x Turkish, Tibetans x Chinese) and that is why I believe Victor s decision was rioght. BTW - the incident is sad and I feel sorry for the victims, but I believe there is not to blame Israel only.

Dear colleagues,
ESLprintables is not a utopian cyberspace and can never be. I think that it is rather a place where ESL teachers cooperate, interact and discuss ESL-related matters. But if some colleagues see that politics has no room in here for various reasons, then let it be as follows:
- create a thread for discussing world politics
- create another for celebrating religious holidays (Xmas, Eid ul-Adha, Hannukah, ...)
- never allow any member to upload a worksheet about religious or political issues
If these measures are not taken into account and moderators see quite the contrary, then let s discuss POLITICS or whatever matter you can think of. But, be unbiased for God s sake and call a spade a spade.
