Is capote the Spanish word for this cape? (In French a capote is a totally different thing! ) |

The one in the photo is called muleta , the capote is bigger and heavier and its colour isn t so red. The capote is used in the first part of the performance and the muleta the rest of the time.

Thanks, neska. In Czech we call it "muleta" too, but my dictionary didn t know the word in English. I am a bit confused now, so I think I will use Zora s "cape".

I was a bit confused too, because I didn t know the French for it...I think we use muleta too.. Maybe because such a thing only exists in Spain ( or Spanish -speaking countries???)In the South of France - very near to Spain, they also use ...muletas! ;o))

In Portugal, we call it "capa".
Bullfights are traditional in our country.
Bullfights are called "touradas" in Portugal.
However in Portugal we don t kill bulls like in Spain.
Cape is maybe the best translation!
Hope it helps! |

The only English word I ve ever heard used is cape . When talking about this sort of thing with friends I usually use the Spanish words to be more specific but they aren t used in English, except by bull fighting aficionados (I m not, I ve just read a lot & seen way too many movies).

We call it a cape in England. The word cape also refers to a similar shaped garment worn (not so much these days) by both men and women as an outer garment - like a coat with no sleeves.
Cape can also refer to a piece of land sticking out to sea - not a sharp pointed piece of land but more of a curve like the shape of the piece of clothing in question.
