Hi, I was wondering how to call the place that you can rent to have a birthday party or any other kind of reception/celebration, when you invite your family, friends or relatives. I �ve heard of the word ballroom but it sounds more formal to me, like the place for a big wedding reception...so:
Last week it was my friend �s birthday. We had a party in a .........????  |

Your friend may have had her party in a hall, such as a banquet hall, or a function hall, or something like this. I would also use hire instead of rent...

If they hired a room/ space rather than a hall, in a hotel, club or restaurant for example, it could have been a function room. |

US English: "We rented a hall for the reception." or "We rented a banquet hall."
also: "We rented a banquet room at the Beachside Hotel." |
