Hi emstacks,
Another activity that we often do is an inside outside activity.
You need: A story about someone similar in age. Where they get challenged or a bully story.
Draw an outline of a person.
On the inside of the outline the children record all of the characters feelings and personal attributes.
On the outside you record their physical description.
the first time it is best to this as a teacher directed activity.
Then the children can create their own body outline (either draw an outline of themselves - or draw around their whole body, foot or hand, or draw around the shadow of their face (OHP or bright light is best for this).
Once you have some sort of body outline, the children have to record their feelings and personal atrributes on the inside and a physical description on the outside.
Another really fun activity to get the children excited about the unit - Take a portrait photo of each of the childrens face and shoulders (Like a passport photo). Cut the photo in half so the cihldren are given only half of their photo (one side of their face). They need to draw the opposite side of their face. Of course you will have them brainstorm the English names for these body parts on the board beforehand.
I hope these are helpful - if you would like further information on these activities - or if you want me to create some sort of worksheet to work from just e-mail me.
Have fun
Vicki
Poem for you -
Everybody says
I look just like my mother. Everybody says
Im the image of Aunt Bee. Everybody says
My nose is like my fathers.
But I want to look like me.
