Pronunciation help

Hi all

Hope you re all having a good day.

I have a question regarding pronunciation and the letter Y

It has a few forms.

We have Y as a vowel:

Long e (i) - eg: anyone
Long i (ai) - eg: flying
and schwa sounds - eg: syringe

We also have y as a consonant:

y - as in sofy j sound, eg: yellow
silent y - as in maybe

Can anyone tell me the rules regarding how someone would know which of these to use if he were reading alone?

thanks

Sarah

Here is my guess:
yellow: because "y" is the first letter of the word and it s followed by a vowel
maybe: rather than saying y is silent, I d say "ay" is pronounced "a"
syringe: schwa is the most common vowel in unstressed syllables, so y in this word is more likely to be a schwa but it could be an [i] sound as in "anyone"
flying: end of stressed syllable

I d recommend you try to find more words with "y" and put these "rules" to the test. Rules are all about probability. There are always exceptions. I feel the best way to improve your knowledge of pronunciation is to listen to English. Your brain will unwittingly come up with reading rules.

I hope this helps!
