Hi!
I m gonna teach children of a 6th grade and I really don t know what to do the 1st lesson..
I d like to introduce myself and get to know the group in an interesting and fun way.
Any ideas? |

One activity that always seems to be fun is to get a ball and write questions all over it. (ex. What is your favorite color? What is your favorite movie? How many siblings do you have?) Toss it to a student. Whichever question their left thumb touches, they must answer. They then pass it to another student. Just make sure that they do not throw too hard! |

Last year, I prepare a Jeopardy PowerPoint about myself. The title was "How Well Do You Know Your English Teacher?". Students had to guess my favourite books (with multiple answers), movies, actor, actress, tv show... as well as my shoe size, favourite animal, my age, the time I got up in the morning on weekdays, etc. The kids had a lot of fun learning about me. |

From http://www.eslcafe.com/idea/index.cgi?Games
Zip Zap Boing
Quite simple and a good idea for the first lesson.
Ask the class to stand in a circle and introduce the Zip. They have to shout Zip and slide clap their hands towards the person standing to their left. They then pass in on and so on. Then the zap. Once the zip has passed around the entire circle you can use the zap. Use both hands to gesture towards anyone in the circle, who can then zap or zip. The boing switches the direction of the movement. Just put up your hands and wiggle them, shouting boing. Once the class has mastered this, change the rules so that no voice or hand motions can be used, only eyes. If any student makes a mistake during the game, ask them a question in english and wait for them to answer before continuing with the game.
This is a great way to encourage the students to pay attention and practise their conversational skills at the same time. |

You can also start the lesson by drawing your name :))) E.g. my name is Olya, so I ll draw an octopus, a lemon, a yacht, and an apple. Children have to decode my name. If they can t explain how to do it (each letter of your name should correspond to a respective picture). Then kids have to do the same individually and exchange their name-codes for others to decode. It s funny:))))

Since this topic has been covered here many times, perhaps the link to those threads might help you as well.
