Hello everybody, Im looking for a song or video extract dealing with the difference between Am and British english. Ive already thought of "Im an English man in NY" and Lets call the whole thing off" but they dont fit.
Maybe you could use "King of Pain". There is a version by Sting and another one by Alanis Morisette.
You have to bear in mind that its difficult to find exact British pronunciation because of the Americanisation process, which has a strong influence on British singers, if you pay attention, for examle in this song, you will see that Sting sometimes pronunces with American features, but you will find differences.
I knew many songs, if I remember them later I will post them here.
Hi Alex Ive found this video (with a song) thats called "You say tomato, I say tomato". (with different pronunciation, of course) Its black and white but it might be helpful...

It might be interesting to teach them too that that phrase is used nowadays as a way to express minor disagreement. Here you have the lyrics:
Its a song by George and Ira Gershwin, from 1937. "Lets Call the Whole Thing Off."
(verse) Things have come to a pretty pass, Our romance is growing flat, For you like this and the other While I go for this and that. Goodness knows what the end will be; Oh, I dont know where Im at... It looks as if we two will never be one, Something must be done.
(refrain) You say eether and I say eyether, You say neether and I say nyther; Eether, eyether, neether, nyther, Lets call the whole thing off! You like potato and I like potahto, You like tomato and I like tomahto; Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto! Lets call the whole thing off! But oh! If we call the whole thing off, Then we must part. And oh! If we ever part, Then that might break my heart! So, if you like pajamas and I like pajahmas, Ill wear pajamas and give up pajahmas. For we know we need each other, So we better call the calling off off. Lets call the whole thing off!
