Niche activity - meaning

What does niche activity mean exactly? Here s the context:
Despite increasing awareness of the benefits of healthy eating and
physical exercise, going to the gym in France is still a niche activity
that has yet to capture the mainstream.
Does it mean only a small amount of people do it?
Thanks

Hi Colibrita
A niche activity, a niche market is used when we refer to very high qualified areas, which are not yet that popular.
For instance, buying bread is almost compulsory, so, if you open a bakery, you are sure you ll have hundreds of people at the door.
But if you decide to open a special kind of restaurant, where you only serve but one kind of food, you know that potential customers will be less, because you have a niche activity, it s only addresses to a small and specific trageted population.
MHO , hope it helps
