I often say to my students, that to understand a people you must understand "where they are coming from"- which means you need to learn a bit about their history, culture, humor, slang and literature.
What is Victorian England without Dickens? What is America without Twain? And what is Scotland without Robert Burns.(just for examples)
I would think that most teachers here know who Burns was or looked it up,- now that information is so easily accessible on the internet. and I don�t think I know many Americans (a melting pot of many cultures) who would take credit for Auld Lang Syne being an American composed song!
