I just checked the link given above and found this:

If it is still or downwards, it usually means OK or alright (or agreement). Thumbs-up with a little upward motion can be a grave insult, depending on context.
What do other Australians think?
I �ve never considered this gesture as an insult, or seen it used as an insult. It means �good, positive � , or it �s used when hitchhiking - must remember not to use it with my Thai students. LOL
Thumbs downward would be negative, not OK, certainly not the explanation given above.

You �re right Apodo - that description for Australia is not correct. In fact, that very same defintion appears in many articles about thumbs up around the world. Somebody got their facts upside down.

That picture is the thumbs up sign, which means well done or ok. If you point it downward it means that something is not well done and not ok.
If you have it at an angle and move it back and forth - it �s a sign for hitch-hiking.
