Language stuff: genre

I need some help, please!
It s about the word: genre
How does one commonly use the word in a really simple way? I don t want to teach my students really complicated/technical usages of the word, or language that a critic might use.

What do you think of the following examples?

What s your favourite genre of music?
What s your favourite music genre?  (musical genre?)
~ My favourite genre of music is rock.
~ My favourite music genre is rock.  (musical genre?)

I m doubting these, because one would normally say: "What s your favourite type of music?" or "My favourite type of music is rock."

I m wondering if we even use the word genre in a casual way at all!
Also, does one capitalise genres of music, like classical, rock, pop, etc?

Thanks in advance :) have a lovely day!

To be honest - I only use the word genre when speaking about literature.
Otherwise I use kind or type or style.

I don t think genre is casual or widely used.

I agree with libertybelle.
Lower case for classical, rock etc.

As LB and BC said, genre is not really used.  In Oz most people simply say kind or type.  You could explain that sometimes they may read or hear genre but that most people use type or kind.
