I like using variety.
Great!  Fantastic!  Amazing!  Way to go!  Wonderful!
But I find my students have really responded to giving them a HIGH FIVE!

AS A CONTINUATION OF THIS POST I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEAR SOME EXPRESSIONS WE USE WHEN A STUDENT FAILS TO READ WELL OR ANSWER A QUESTION DURING AN ORAL CHECK-UP

AS FOR THE PRAISE WITH THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL I USUALLY USE SIMPLE EXPRESSIONS,LIKE

I M SO HAPPY WITH YOU
THAT S CORRECT
EXCELLENT

WRITTEN PRAISE IS MORE ELOQUENT TRYING TO TEACH THEM MORE PRAIS WORDS, LIKE

SO NEAT
SUPER HANDWRITING
AMAZING ,FABULOUS, FANTASTIC, WAY TO GO, YOU HAVE IMPROVED A LOT, TERRIFIC...

Here s a few I use, and try to use liberally, to praise and encourage my adult students:

Good work!
Good job!
Excellent!
Great!
You did it!
Good try!
You fixed your mistake yourself!
I know it s hard, but you can do it!
You ve got it!

I know they sound trite and clichd, but the phrases are easy to understand and really seem to motivate the students. The most important part of praising and encouraging students is the sincerity. Because they don t know the language, they receive so much of their information not from the words but from the posture, face, hands, and voice. I don t say "Great work" when the student makes a lot of mistakes. I say "Good try."

Now, if your student really doesn t even try, that s the time to give the student a (figurative) kick in the pants.

This website has some more ideas. I hope this helps.

All of the ways mentioned above are great, but I have a poster of 101 ways to praise a child.  Here is the website where I found it...

If you type "praise" in the content box of the "search worksheets" section here in ESL PRINTABLES, you ll find a number worksheets listing different ways of praising a child. Hope it helps!
