Which one is correct?
|
Hi everybody, would you please help me with this issue:
Which question is the right form?
What s this letter? / What s this room? / What s this word?
OR
What letter is this? / What room is this? / What word is this?
Thanks in advance for your help. |

We were taught that What s is spoken English and What is - is written English. If you re writing and you want to quote someone, then you can write: Tony asked, What s this letter doing here?"

Thanks for your help, but what I meant is which one comes first, the noun or the verb!!
What is this letter? OR What letter is this?
Thanks again... |

As Dawn says, both are fine, but if you need to get down to the nitty-gritty, remember that the verb in each case is copular (identify this letter etc) but ask the same questions using which. It seems awkward in the first examples but works perfectly well in the second. Why do you think this is?
