prepositions - a question

Hi fellow Teachers :)

I m never sure what prepositions to use when talking about grades, whether it s e.g. an A, or a 5, as it it in my country.

Which is correct:

He got a B (or a 4) on/in a test in English?

Or perhaps they both are?

I ll be gradetul for your help. Thanks in advance!

Marta

As an American, I d say on a test. It might be different in England, Australia, or other English-predominant countries.

As an Ozzie Id say in/for an English test:

He got a B (or a 4) in an English test

He got a B (or a 4) for his English test

Cheers

Dear MartaZ,

Here in the UK, I would say:

"He/she got a B (4) in his/her English Test".
"He/she got a B (4) in a Test in English".

"He/she got a B (4) for his/her English Test".
"He/she got a B (4) for a Test in English".

In these sentences, I would find the prepositions. in and for , absolutely normal.

Although I have no problem understanding what "on a Test" means, I  do not recall anyone in the UK saying "on a Test", so it is possibly an Americanism.

I hope that this helps you.

Les
