Articles in city names.

Hi guys,
Can anyone think of cities that have an article in the name?
The only example I can think of is "The Hague", but there must be more right?
Thanks in advance Adam

The Hague has an article because of its translation into English. Generally, most cities dont use articles - or I cant think of any names that arent nicknames for the given city.

Thanks for your help guys. The Emerald City is just the example I was looking for - though I also wonder if it is a nickname or the official name Unfortunately The Alice is also a nickname, same as The Big Apple, The Windy City, The City of Lights...
I thought of another one - The Bronx - but I hope one of my American colleagues might be able to tell me whether it is the official name or just a nickname for Bronx County? I can t find a definitive answer...

Sophia,I can see why you might be interested in Nestor Makhno (for it is he) - he was a Ukrainian anarchist. I used to use this avatar in another forum, for reasons entirely unrelated to teaching or language, and thought I d just revive him.
(coincidentally, there is apparently still debate as to whether Ukraine should take the definite article - presumably along the lines of Gambia/The Gambia ) |

You re right about Ukraine/The Ukraine Alex. I myself would say The Ukraine, and it s the same in the Czech language too.
Thanks for the list Frank, even the cheeky ones It was impossible to google for these kind of facts, I guess you just gotta know them...

NO-NO! Ukraine as opposed to the Ukraine (the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic former part of the USSR). Now when it s no longer a part of any state but is independent it was considered to be logical to use the name without the article.Alex, actually I haven t recognised Nestor. I thought he was a she (Some Son ka Golden Hand) How come a Scot could have Nestor Machno as a favourite hero? Sophia |
