if you scroll down, someone gave a mathematical explanation for this trick but it is still neat!!
( I would never have been able to figure it out)
This is the explanation on the site...
Firstly, Let x be first digit and y be second digit and the sum of x & y be z x + y = z xy - z = x0-x -> that means 36-9=30-3, 85-13=80-8, 66-12=60-6, ... so you can find that any number you try would also met this equation. The answer must be 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72 or 81 You can check the symbol table for each time. The symbol of these numbers must the same and it �s also the answer. |

The number represented by the (random) symbol which the gopher shows you will always be a multiple of 9 (as Marion says above: 9, 18, 27 etc) but he also assigns the same symbol to some non-multiples on the table to muddy the waters a bit. I�d love to hear what Bruce (Yanogator) has to say about this.
