Holly s "wet kipper" reminded me of a piece of advice I read once:
Eat a live frog every morning, and nothing worse than that will happen to you the rest of the day.

Oh! Just remembered another one! In my house, when someone forgets to close the door and lets the cold in, we always say, "were you born in a barn!?" (and since its my dad who is usually the recipient of this AND who was actually born in a Spanish country house which often has the barn under it... - likes to answer: "No, but I was born over one!" LOL )

In Portuguese we say "Dou um boi para no entrar numa briga e uma boiada para no sair dela". Let me see if I can translate it. "I ll give an ox to avoid getting in a fight but a whole herd to stay in it" meaning that we try to avoid figths but, once we re involved in one we fight until the end. |

Lovely thread!
I ve got a good one but will need Alicia and Zora s help to translate it into English. Here it goes: "No se confundan! Hocico de chancho no es enchufe!" |

And my mother used to say, "Leave a bathroom the way you would if you had committed a crime". This is so ingrained in me that I find myself drying sinks and cleaning faucets in public bathrooms! |

I m not a Spanish speaker, but my guess in English is "Don t confuse me with the facts! I KNOW I m right!" |

I am enjoying a lot with the thread, thanks Zora. I like "A closed moth catches no flies" but it is very common in all languages I know
