Hi there Martina,

Your question intrigued me so I did a google search.

Although I would naturall say, for example, "I have already eaten.", I have heard people say "I already ate."

Well, it seems according to this:

that it is a difference between British and American English.

Hope this helps you and answers your question.

All the best for 2011

Yes, what I know and have been teaching for nine years about the adverb "already" is that it s used with the present perfect.

I totally agree on that.  There are differences between British and American English usages.

Hmmm. While the examples in http://www.englishgrammarsecrets.com/presentperfectorpastsimple/menu.php
are categorized as British English or American English, I have heard both used here in the States interchangeably.

Hi Ed,

Sorry, I wasn t very clear in my initial explanation.

I think the link is saying the same thing as you, that they can be used interchangeably in American English. As it says often used with the past simple in American English

so I think it means either can be used in American English and only present perfect in British English.

BTW everyone I m not trying to shout, I just don t know how to change my font back to regular size after copying and pasting, sorry.

And sorry again for not being clearer.

"he tried to convince me but i already made my mind up."

already belongs to perfect tenses but we can use past simple instead of past perfect. i think we have past simple+already for this reason.

In my opinion

we can use already with present perfect as well as past perfect, How

They have already finished their work. ( there is no specific  of time)

Or
When he arrived home, his wife had already finished preparing the food.

In communication we can say ( The work already finished ) What is the problem.
