Song about American history

Hi, dear colleagues all over the world,

I would really appreciate your ideas suggestions on this.
I must give a lesson to eight-graders, aged 14, B2 - level.
It should be based on a song about American history. History (for whatever - or no? - reason) being something from at least 50 years ago. So, Pilgrims, Indians, discovery of America, Vietnam war would be OK, but not 9/11...
It is a mixed class of girls and boys, virtually interested in anything or nothing at all, you know what I mean.

What ideas for the song do you have? (I just need the song titles.)
Thanks for any suggestions.
Petra

There are many songs about American history on the Schoolhouse Rock series. You have to find that and download; I ve heard there s also a hip-hop album about American history which is actually pretty good. However I don t know what it s called. Eighth grade second language students I would not try Strange Fruit as someone suggested, and the Bruce Springsteen song requires a lot of explanation. You might actually try teaching the National Anthem. There s a lot of history behind that, but otherwise I would suggest the Schoolhouse rock stuff - videos on Youtube for those too. it s called America rock I believe.

I would  use the song " The colours of the Wind" sung in the film "Pocahontas". Why not showing them the film and explore the idea of colonization of the indians by the white man?
I m sure you ll get their attention.

Hope this will bring some ideas!

Leonor
