What is the meaning of Pop eye

Hi,
My brother s teacher asked the class about the meaning of Popeye.
Unfortunatley , I don t have a clue.
They said to him popeye is the Sailor Man
He said "No, it has a meaning what isit????"
Can you give me the meaning if you know , please ?? |

Why waste the class s time with questions that are trivial. The most famous Popeye is Popeye the sailor man. There are so many important things to learn - so why this? Just asking.

Well, all I can tell you is that there is a fish disease called popeye, in which the fishe s eye protrudes (pops) and if left untreated eventually bursts open. I hapen to know this because I keep two tropical fish tanks! I can t imagine what the teacher had in mind though, and I doubt it was fish! |

To answer your question Pretty...... Its when an eye or eyes are staring and are bulging out of their sockets.
Like with excitement or being scared of something or someone.
But this saying is not really used anymore. redbull gives you wings you know . |

Hi everyone.
I thought Popeye the sailor was given this name because of his pop eye (he couldn`t use one of his eyes). |

Wow - I think your brother s teacher is very clever! Your brother is excited about learning something and we ve all being going away and looking into it too. I haven t found anything different to the spinach-promoting character or the fish disease but it was fun to look!

Throughout the English speaking world when someone says Popeye they think of the pipe-smoking tattooed sailor whose muscles bulge after eating a tin of spinach.
I doubt that many NS would know or use any other meaning of this word so Im afraid to say that your brothers teacher is not up with the times.
On another note did you know that his nephews are Peepeye, Poopeye, Pipeye and Pupeye and his father is Poopdeck Pappy? More people would know this than any other meaning of Popeye. |
