Dear Colleagues/Native speakers please help!
Are these sentences possible in English?
Having been written by Cook, the book is a great success.
Having been damaged by the earthquake, the building is no longer habitable.
(The task was to join two sentences using participles. Eg. The book is a great success. It was written by Cook.)
Thanks! |

The book written by Cook is a great success. The building damaged by the earthquake is no longer habitable. Sophia P.S. but Im not a native speaker of course.

Hello Bonca, I am a native speaker and your sentences sound ok to me. The first one seems a bit stilted (not the most natural way of saying it) but correct nonetheless, I believe!

I, as a native speaker, would probably say: "Written by Cook, the book is a great success" or more naturally: "The book, written by Cook, is a great success."The second is correct and very topical at the moment especially in NZ.
