You could try this activity jusst before a reading comprehension text.
Take the heading of the text and put it on the board. Give each student a sheet of A4 paper. They write the heading at the top and then in the left hand column imagine vocabulary, expressions, etc that they THINK they would find in the text (from the heading, of course). They should be seated in a ring (if possible) so that when they have found about 12-16words or expressions, they pass their sheet on to the next person. They now have to imagine and write the first paragraph of the text using 3-4 words or expressions they find on the sheet they have been handed, crossing them out as they use them. They have to add others of course! Tell them not to worry about grammar, this is an invention exercise and it s fun!
When they have finished the first paragraph they pass their sheet on and invent the second paragraph after having read the first paragraph already written first and then using 3-4 words or expressions they find on THAT sheet they write the second paraphraph! They will already see how all the text is different from theirs! Do the same thing again with the remaining words for the third paragraph and pass them on again.
Now each student, depending on the size of the class, should have a text that he has never seen before. Ask him to read it silently trying to understand it regardless of the grammatical mistakes. The teacher could then read some out load making correctiions (or not) as he/she goes along.
In the end give them the real text and see if anyone in the class was close! You ll see it keeps them interested all the time and can make them more attentive to the real text.
Have fun,
