If you have ever gone out into a cornfield and pulled an ear of corn off the stalk because you like to eat fresh corn on the cob and then, after taking a BIG bite out of it, realizing that the sweet taste you were expecting is instead a disgusting bitter taste, then you know first hand (and will never forget) the difference between "sweet" corn and "feed" corn. This I can attest to, as it happened to me at a very young age.
As already explained:
-the ear is the entire unit that protudes from the stalk (cob, silk, husk, corn)
-the cob is the hard center of the ear
-the silk is the "tassel" hanging out the top of the ear
-the husk is the green, "leafy" stuff that protects the corn
-the corn is all the (usually) yellow kernels growing from the cob
sweet corn - is one of many types of corn and about the only one eaten by humans.
note: apparently this is also a term used in some English speaking countries (not the USA) for canned, kernal corn (corn kernels removed from the cob)
feed corn - is another type of corn used to feed livestock, it s not eaten by humans due to its bitter taste
corn on the cob- another way of eating sweet corn, where the corn is eaten directly from the cob.
"a cob of corn"
"a kernel of corn"
