Much

Could someone please tell me why the English say "There is SO much rain this year" but not, "there is much rain this year"? Yes it is more natural to use " a lot of" in the second case  but is it incorrect to use "much"?
Thanks

A lot of is used in affirmative sentences.Much and many are used in interrogative and negative sentences. They can be used in affirmative sentences if there is so,as or too before them.
