Hi everybody,
I �m just correcting a bunch of 50 rephrasing sentences one of my students gave me b4 Easter holidays to correct. The point is that I don �t have the key and I �m stuck with some of them. Could you please give me a hand?
Gary wanted the vet to examine his dog immediately. TAKE
Gary insisted that the vet ............................. his dog immediately.
People donated lots of money after we performed in London. FOLLOWING
We received lots of ............................... in London.
"Please, don �t phone me at home at weekends," said the coach. RATHER
"I ................. me during the week," said the coach. ( rather you did not call) ??
Despite Dan �s serious injuries, he managed to survive. EVEN
Dan managed to pull ................................ he was seriously injured.
"It �s getting late so i think I ought to go now," said Mr. Healey. BE
"It �s getting late so I really ...............................," said Mr. Healey.
James hardly ever drove his car at night. USED
James ............. his car at night. (never used to drive)?? the meaning is not the same though.

"Please, don �t phone me at home at weekends," said the coach. RATHER
"I �D RATHER YOU PHONED me during the week," said the coach. ( rather you did not call) ??

Dan managed to pull THROUGH EVEN THOUGH he was seriously injured.
"It �s getting late so i think I ought to go now," said Mr. Healey. BE
"It �s getting late so I really SHOULD/OUGHT TO BE GOING NOW," said Mr. Healey.
James hardly ever drove his car at night. USED
James USED NOT TO DRIVE his car at night. (never used to drive)?? the meaning is not the same though.

1. "take care" is not the same as "examine" (to me, at least)

I agree with Zora. Note: If you are teaching Oxford English use "phone" vs "call" for #3.

Thank you very much to everybody for your time and help. With those sentences with different versions I will follow the most voted ones. However, I have a further question related to sentence # 3. Don �t we use the structure "would rather + past simple" when we want somebody to do sth? Isn �t this the case? On the other hand, as far as I know the verbs "ring", "phone", and "call" are synonyms. Why do you suggest me to use "phone" vs "call"? Thanks in advance. |
