Hi
I need your help. It is correct to report the following sentence:
"Let s watch the new TV show" as He suggested that we watch the new TV show.
I would have said - he suggested that we watched .... or he suggested watching....
I have seen this in BRIDGES 1-Burlington

Hi eduran, In the sentence "He suggested that we watch the new TV show." the verb form "watch" is a subjunctive, and the subjunctive is the same whether the sentence is present (he suggests) or past (he suggested). Actually, I ve seen this structure in example sentences in many dictionaries, like this (Liz suggested (that) I try the shop on Mill Road.) and this (suggested that we take a walk).

I would say
" He suggested that we should watch"according to Practical English Usage by Michael Swan
With certain verbs: order, command, insist, demand, request, suggest... he proposes the that ...should construction.
Does it help, bye

Gloria is correct, but in the US, at least, the simple verb (without "should") is more common with all these verbs.
He ordered that we leave the room.
They insisted that we go with them.
She requested that I help her with her problem.
"Should" works in these examples, too, but it isn t as common.

to report a suggestion you can use the following;
He suggested watching tv.
He suggested that we should watch tv.
He suggested we watched tv. |
