Adapt a story

hi dear colleagues!

I ve got a short story told in the simple past to be used with my young learners. I need to adapt it transferring all verbs in the Present Simple. However, the first paragraph doesn t sound so good to me in the Present Simple. Are there any suggestions? Here s the beginning:

Once upon a time, far, far away, there lived a king who had a beautiful daughter who was a princess. They lived in a castle surrounded by a large forest.

There is a king who lives far, far away.  He has a beautiful daughter who is a princess.  They live in a castle surrounded by a large forest.

I would leave out once upon a time because that refers to the telling of a tale in the past.

Thanks Giovanni,

that was exactly what troubled me - the presence of "once upon a time"
