Hi please I am reading an article about the upper peninsula in Michigan and I dont know what LOCKS mean in this context "It was really interesting to stand there and watch the boats as they worked their way through the locks"
I have also searched on images and there are boats on locks still dont get it :(

Locks are used in water transportation to move a ship from one level of water to another level.

One famous set of locks in in the Panama Canal. wiki encyclopedia says, "The Panama Canal Locks, which lift ships up 25.9 m (85 ft) to the main elevation of the Panama Canal...

http://www.eriecanal.org/locks.html has information on the Erie canal locks..."
