What is more correct to say?

Then the bird sang loudly

or then the bird sang loud

I got it from a poem and I have doubt.
Thanks

Fabiola R

The bird sang loudly.

You must say loudly because what you want to do is to modify the verb (sang) and adverbs modify verbs.

Hope I am not mistaken..

Fabiola is correct but the poet is probably using poetic license .  This is when an artist does not adhere to convention or the rules of grammar in order to achieve a particular effect.

Yes, the poet is allowed to break as many rules as he/she wishes, but not our students.  I have this quote up in my class.

"Every English poet should master the rules of grammar before he attempts to break them." (Robert Graves)

Have a happy day!

The purpose of poetic license:

I saw the Jay puff up so proud,
And then the bird sang out so loud (ly?!).

Which is to say it s ungrammatical and therefore lyrical.

Did any of the posters above think to check a dictionary before they posted? Loud is an established adverb, as even a cursory glance at its dictionary entry would have informed you. Absolutely nothing ungrammatical or rule-breaking about it.
