No Native speaker would ever interpret a criminal lawyer as a lawyer who is a criminal. We wouldn �t call a Discrimination Lawyer a lawyer someone who discriminates!
There are many kinds of lawyer - named after their specialties. Divorce lawyers criminal lawyers corporate lawyers

Toofan, I would say the functional ambiguity lies rather with the word �visiting �, which can be an adjective (professors from another institution who are temporary, or visiting) or a gerund participial (having to visit professors in their little domains or wherever), so the relationship to the noun (although in both cases �professors � are part of the subject, surely?) in either case is not immediately clear.
