Not a bad idea. It s sth good to start with. Of course, it is not neccessary to use your trios. some of them are obvious and probably everybody would come up with the same trio, but some of your trios are pretty optional. Very good to enrich your vocab. |

The phrase that denoted excommunication from the Catholic church.
Origin of Bell, Book, and Candle
In the excommunication ceremony officials close the book, quench the candle and toll a bell, as for someone who had died. The phrase is old and first appears, in Old English, circa 1300:
"Curced in kirc an sal ai be wid candil, boke, and bell."
Shakespeare used the phrase in King John, 1595:
BASTARD: Bell, book, and candle shall not drive me back, When gold and silver becks me to come on.
(I learned something new today--thanks)
EDIT: see also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell,_book,_and_candle
Also and a couple Americanized triplets: bacon,eggs, and hash browns; breakfast, lunch and dinner; hop, skip and jump.

douglas, you have too much time on hand?? thanks for your prompt reply. You are ever so knowledgeable !! I have made two nice worksheets with a large choice of Les trios - leaving out one of the words and replacing it by dots - pretty much like this:
1.
ice, water &
2.
inch, .. & yard;
3.
.., fork & spoon;
4.
land, .. & sky;
5.
left,  & centre;
6.
.., breadth & height;
so that students can revise vocab on their own and check with a solution sheet
