vocabulary help -please
|
Dear friends, doing some writing and have stumbled upon an obstacle - cannot think of the perfect verb which refers to the wonderful sound wood planks make when they burn in a fireplace! Help, please! Do you know a verb or at least can suggest a good online dictionary where I can find it???? Thanks in advance! Anita |

Hi! Anita I think the verb you are looking for is "crackle" because I ve read that wood produces crackling noise/sound when it s burnt. Thus the verb crackle will go with it. I ve checked it too. The sentence I ve found is: The rain has eased but the firewood still crackles like the devil s frying pan. Hope it d be of some help to you. Have a good day!
Regards!

I know the verb to crack, it sounds like distant shots but....
Is there a word for the "bubbling" or "hooting" sound as well? Is it "to whisper"? I mean the "hissing" sound the fire makes or the sound of a very small fire? Is it "to hum"?
...and is there a word for the sound the huge fire makes? Is it "to roar"?
I am really curious!

Moravc A crackling fire is a softer sound than distant shots.
A huge fire could probably roar - good word for it!
