WORD of the DAY
|
Hello, Everyone, (I m beginning to feel like a full-time Member of Staff on ESLP!) Here s today s WORD of the DAY. What does this frequently-used, idiomatic expression REALLY mean? "Has the cat got your tongue?" (This week is CAT S WEEK). Let s have your silliest definition, please. The Winner will be chosen tomorrow night. Les |

The idiomatic expression Has the cat got your tongue? comes from a word which oddly enough has the word cat in it. Catatonic refers to being in a stupor or a condition where one is rendered immobile and unable to speak. The original phrase was Are you in a catatonic state? Of course if the person was in such a state the there would be no answer and if an answer was given that would render the question moot or is it mute?Anyway that phrase later became Has the catatonic state got your tongue? meaning are you in such a state that you cannot speak. Humans that we are, we are always looking for shortcuts (e.g. Les for Leslie, Ed for Edwin and etc. so that we dont have to continue the list) the phrase became Has the cat got your tongue? |

Well, what about Has the CATalonian GOThic YOUth Revealed he had spoken the word tongue instead of language ?
I am afraid he couldnt... He is deaf, mute and blind...
Poor guy ! So his tongue is useless to speak any language ! |

And thus Capitalism s reply was, "What s a matta? Cat got yer tongue?" |

Les, do not overwork yourself, you can take break from ESL printables, take a vacation maybe to France, Italy, Germany, its a good escape from those riot, looting and fire.
"Has the Cat got your tongue"
Has the cat managed to French Kiss you
However,
Curiosity killed the Cat
that includes an attempt on kissing humans
