vocabulary question: words from (?) a semantic field?
|
Dear friends,
I m not sure about this instruction:
"Write down words from the "ghost" semantic field".
Could you tell me if it s correct and how to improve the sentence please?
Thanks a lot!!!!:)
Have a great day!

I d rather use "topic" instead of "semantic field"

I ve no idea what you mean...
Do you want me to write a number of words related to ghosts, like haunted house? |

Because of the phrase "semantic field" in the instructions, I d suppose "haunted house" would not be appropriate. I think it may have to do with the stem of the word and its "family". Perhaps some acceptable answers would be: ghostly, ghost-like and ghost-writer. |

"Write down words from the "ghost" semantic field". Write down words related to the semantic field of the word " ghost " Write down words related to the family of the word " ghost "??????

Valentinaper is right. It s not a matter of association (haunted house, for example) but of meaning - other words, phrases, idiomatic expresssions, etc., that have the word "ghost": ghost story, ghost town, ghost writer, give up the ghost... Have a nice day, mena |

I didn t understand what you meant until I read Linda s rephrasing. I think either
"Write down words related to the semantic field of the word " ghost "
Write down words related to the family of the word " ghost " would be preferable as instructions.
Have a nice afternoon.

Hi there Monty!
I think you need to clarify this a little bit. I understand "semantic field" as being words related to "ghost" but not necessarily direct synonyms. (i.e. Spirits, spooks, poltergeists, banshees, etc.. )
Now if you are looking for words related to or describing "ghosts", I d just phrase the question as:
Write down words related to the topic of ghosts. (i.e. spook, haunted house, supernatural, etc.)

I agree with Linda (as usual). Initially, I was like Philip and didn t understand at all what you wanted.
You could also simplfy even further and say "Write down words related to the word ghosts." |

@Mena
Are you not thinking of lexeme (or lemma - as in the headword of a dictionary entry)? I ve always thought of a semantic field as having interrelated sets of lexemes ( food , for example , is a semantic field which contains sandwich , piri-piri , haggis etc).
Oh, and you have a nice day, too.
