Teaching English through Literature

Hello. I am working on a school project
and I am investigating how do English teachers use different genres of literature
(drama, poems, essays, novels, etc) to teach the English as a foreign language?
I will appreciate if you tell me about your experience, any suggestion, any
discussion and websites links, books or researches
related to this topic. I will be very grateful with you.
Have a nice weekend.
Thank you.

It depends on the knowledge level and age of our students, but I definitely try to introduce stories and poetry to my students, even if it is by using readers. For instance, I am going to do Edgar A. Poe s Black Cat for Halloween with my teenage students - we listen and read, I stop it from time to time, we talk about their predictions on what s going to happen, etc. We play word games with the vocabulary, they get comprehension worksheets, sometimes I play it without the ending and they have to write their own versions, etc. When I did limericks last year, I had the students paired up into writing their own limericks to get the feeling of rhythm. With smaller children I did D. Melling s Hugless Douglas last year and The Kiss that Missed this year (used the book, cd, ppts available on the internet and youtube, etc.) Sometimes we read sth in episodes and have team games and competitions about it. Sometimes we compare it to the corresponding movies. Sometimes I turn stories into plays and we rehearse them and perform for the parents. Here are some links I sometimes use, depending on their age and knowledge levels. I hope this helps a bit. Anita |
