In assimilation, a sound (the assimilated sound)
takes on characteristics of another sound (the conditioning sound).
There are three types of assimilation:
� progressive assimilation; phoneme changes to match the
preceding phoneme.
� regressive assimilation; phoneme changes to match the
following phoneme.
� coalescent assimilation; two adjacent sounds
combine to form a new sound.
