St George - Patron Saint of England
|
hello ! Does anyone know why Saint George is the Patron Saint of England? He was a Christian Roman soldier after all. Why did the English choose a Roman to be their patron saint?

"It s believed that Saint George was adopted in England because the story in the Golden Legend was similar to an Anglo-Saxon legend."
"St George appeared to English soldiers at the Battle of Antioch in 1098 and the soldiers adopted him as their patron saint. King Richard I put the English army under the protection of St George when he was campaigning in the Holy Land in 1191-92. His appeal became widespread and a number of miracles where attributed to him, and by the end of the 14th century he was declared the Patron Saint of England." http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100124014446AAzw0hM
