We are going on a week long holiday. OR
We are going for a week long holiday.
Both are OK. We go for or on a holiday. I prefer for here, because we say for a week and this puts emphasis on the time.

or would you use something else for ON or FOR? No

Move the books __________ the second shelf. (to, on, onto or anything else)

To moving position   or onto Moving to a position on something. Both OK.

The meaning changes with on or from: Move the books on the second shelf to the top shelf.
Move the books from the second shelf to the top shelf.

The show lasted ___________ eight o clock ___________ ten thirty.
The show lasted from eight o clock to/till until ten thirty.

I would use till or until for a measure of passing time.  but From place to place.

Gyan is allowed to watch television ___ an hour __ dinner.
Gyan is allowed to watch television for an hour at or during dinner.

Gyan is allowed to watch television for an hour at dinner time.

Some animals hunt _________ (during/at) the night.

Some animals hunt at night.
or
Some animals hunt during the night.

I hope that Gyan is allowed to watch television for an hour before or after dinner, but not during dinner.

@ Bruce,
I hope so too! The thought did cross my mind when I replied. We all know eating dinner in front of the TV is a no-no.LOL

Going FOR a week long holiday? Who on earth would say that? That s bad English right there. You should say I am going on holiday for a week , not for a week long holiday .
