Whose name comes to your mind when I say Czechoslovakia / The Czech Republic?

Our democratic president, the symbol of Velvet Revolution, Vaclav Havel died today. The country is mourning. Many journalists, politics and ordinary people think that Vaclav Havel is the most famous Czech. Do you know any Czech politicians or writers? Who do you find important for the Czech Republic? Who is a famous Czech IN YOUR OPINION? (I will talk about it with my students so I would like to know opinions from countries all round the world...)

Oh! What a loss! How sad to know that. I have always respected and admired him. In our common socialist past he was a symbol of hope for freedom to be possible in our country as well. My condolence to all czech people.

First of all I share your grief. My condolence to all Czech people. So far I have known Mendel and Kafka but in these days Petra Kvitova is the most famous Czech person for me.

Hi Nika
My deepest condolences. Vaclav Havel is someone I know and have respected for what he stands for. I know Kafka and I most admire the way he found to raise some of the most dramatick subjects, related to freedom.
You have to admit that your country, through ages, has been a part of several empires. It s hard for me, and for sure, for many of us to know our own HISTORy - we can only know some very general aspects of other countries. I ve never been To first Czecoslovakia or to Republic Czeck, but I know Karluv Most and some more places, cause one of my children has been there and come back with tons of wonderful memories - I have a painting and an amazing photo of Karluv most.
Nika, my deepest feelings, you, for sure, have a big country.
Linda
edit : Sorry, how could i forgot Milan Kundera....

God, I m really sorry for the Czech People..... a great man. Kundera and Kafka are the two famous writers who come to my mind when I think of your country. I loved the film adapted from Kundera s novel: L insoutenable lgret de l tre with Juliette Binoche... |

my condolences to you and your people... I had not heard of him before I read the news today, but I imagine what you feel... the most famous Czech people I know are 2 models: Ivana Trump - althought she s no longer only known for her modeling career - and Eva Herzigova. and I know Kafka obviously :) I knew who Mendel was but I didn t know his nationality. and I guess we all know a few Czech Sportsmen: Martina Navratilova and a few hockey players whose name I can pronounce or spell (my hubby is a huge hockey fan!!!)

My condolences to the Czech people. Good luck to you.
All the afore mentioned names are well know but I d like to add another, Jan Amos Komensky. I think he embodied many of the traits of the Czech people at a difficult period in history. A brave man and an influential educator.
