My feeling is that it is okay without the pronoun (I use the form all the time)--one of the rules experts will have to explain it though.

Here are the meanings of ask and what it can be followed by; http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ask Now in your sentence asked is an introductory verb which is used to introduce questions so it can be followed by if or the corresponding question word.eg."Can you help me?"He asked me if I could help him. "Where is your book?" He asked me where my book was. Dora

It is definitely correct. I don t even know what pronoun you would use, or where you would put it.

Thank you for your answers. I understand from you replies that in reported speech the introductory verb ask can be followed either a noun/pronoun or the clause.
He asked me what time itwas.
He asked what time it was. |
