a wastepaper basket is for papers (near your desk for example)... if you put other things in it then it s better to say "bin":) have a nice week!

The receptacle in which you place garbage (litter, paper, cigar butts) has many names and these may differ between different countries. The others have already named most of these.
- bin (UK, and proably the most common))
- rubbish bin (UK)
- dust bin (UK, and a bit old fashioned, at least in Australia)
- trash can (US)
- garbage can (US)
- waste paper basket/bin (quite formal, and as Elodie said, really for your office desk paper litter)
- waste bin - I don t know about this one. I don t hear people use it.
Nowadays, with the emphasis on recycling, we hear recycling bin a lot. If it is recycylable we usually say to put it in the recycling bin.
Cheers
