I need help
where is the mistake here:

I think it �s not a conditional but a normal sentence when someone is talking what was hapenning usually if he /she was late

Interesting question. It �s actually a zero conditional expressing past habit. You could say "if I was" or "when I was". The only difference is that "when" is used to refer to something that happened with more regularity.
 
Eg: I was a bad kid, whereas my sister was a good kid. When I was bad, my parents spanked me. If my sister was bad, my parents spanked me for being a bad influence.
