Your profession is your job.
But when talking about different types of work:
A profession usually requires a university degree. Doctor, lawyer, teacher
A trade: electrician, plumber, carpenter
Professional can also mean earns money from doing something :
A professional golfer is someone who earns money playing the game.
An amateur golfer is someone who plays golf without earning money.(but they may be a very good player)
We also say He s a professional. - a pro when someone is very good at something.
He s an amateur - a ham - used in derogatory way if they aren t so good.

I often tell my students that a professional job requires your brain, e.g., doctor, lawyer, accountant, engineer, etc.
A skilled job, or trade requires your hands, e.g., auto mechanic, hair dresser, etc.
An unskilled job requires your back, e.g., construction worker, housekeeper, etc.
Since my students are adults, many of them middle-aged, I encourage them to train for the hands-on trade jobs. There is a strong demand for many trades here in the USA. So many of us look down on trades, but they really can make good money. |
