Is the answer always yes ?
|
Hi,
There is a lesson in the student s book .
It is about asking for and giving opinion
Is it right the answer always Yes if the question starrts with :
Don t you think .......?
and Is the answer is always No if the question starts with :
Do you think ..............?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Pretty |

Hi dear,I have asked this question before. I was correcting exams papers with another teacher, and she considered the answer with "yes" for "do you.....?" wrong. I was wondering that it might be also" no"! I made research on the website, and found that the speaker who asks this question expects the answer"no", but the reply of the other speaker might clash with his expectaions!! So it is not wrong grammatically to answer with "no">Regards,Sondos |

mrssondos is definitely right about this. It s about the questioner s expectation, not the actual answer.Bruce |

This question of expectation is important with tag questions. You did put the cat out, didn t you? You really expect yes. You didn t put the cat out, did you? He d better say no! |
