CHIME ON and OFF

Does anyone know the meaning of this phrasal verb?

Dear colleagues

Though the text says CHIME ON and OFF I believe it is to turn the CHIME on and off


so, the phrasal is turn on and off but I still don �t understand very well what a CHIME might be.
I �d like to add I read this in a technical text!
